Installation

When thinking about my exhibition and how I was going to show the books I have made, I started thinking about what it was that made me want to change books and make them come to life. it was the idea of imagination, and how reading books can make u conjur up sights, smells and sounds all from the story on the page. This idea of childhood imagination made me think about who would read the books, and the books that I have are all about adventure and strange creatures, and I could just imagin a little boy from the past reading them, a sort of real life peter pan, living through his books and bringing them to life with his imagination. This has lead me to the idea of doing an istallation of his bed-side table, for this I thought about Tracey Emin's "Unmade bed" I think this would be a good idea to follow, but including the veiwer to participate in the piece by picking the books up and looking at them to see what they do.

Yuken Teruya

Is an artists based in New York, he make intricate paper sculptures, inside books and other objects. This has made me think about the details you could have inside books, and what you can make out of them, I like while they are not strictly pop up books they are still related to my project, as they are all about imagination and telling stories about his home of Okinawa

Cara Berer

Cara Barer is a photographer who was doing a project about books and their changing appearance, "A random encounter on Drew Street with the Houston Yellow Pages was the primary inspiration for this project. After that chance meeting, I began the search for more books, and more methods to change their appearance"

I just really like the idea of changing books into unexpected things and I think this is similar to my project, with the idea of books being able to surprise people.

Darwen, Lancashire: Red Painted Red Brick Buildings

Red Painted Red Brick

The saying "Paint the town Red" comes from my birthplace of Melton Mowbry, when in 1837 the  Marquess of Waterford got drunk one night with a group of fellow revelers and literally went around the town of Melton with red paint painting the buildings. I was thinking about what the phrase means today, to go out and have a good time and let your hair down; and the literal meaning of the words. To PAINT the town RED.

In this part of the country where I live, Lancashire, there are a lot of red brick buildings that have then been painted red once the brick starts to fade. I thought this was a really interesting idea, all about restoration, especially when the paint starts to fade and flake off revealing the red brick behind.

Red Brick painted Red.

Gulivers Travels

The pop-up ship I made in the middle of a book of Gulivers Travels.

Old Work

This is some work from a project I did in foundation. I went out and took photographs of car lights in motion at night, I then printed them out and dyed them in the bath using brusho powder. I used bleach in places to remove the printer ink and write the street names into the photographs/ It is the colours and hazey style the images are in that I like and want to explore further with my new project.

Rankin's Destroy Project

Rankins project "Destroy" where musicians edit, transform and destroy their portraits taken by Rankin. I love the idea of manipulating photographs after they have been printed.

Gerhard Richter

Gerhard Richter's painted photographs. I love the colour and texture he uses and the idea of painting onto ordinary photographs or scenary and people.

The Starting Point

This was just because I was in the mood to start taking some photographs even though it was done in the very tungsten light of my living room at night I think they have some potential. They are of my housemates Lauren and Natalie.

New Project Research

I have decided that I want to do a photography project, focusing on portraits mainly I think, and this is one photographer I found that I really like his work. He has a very graphic style and sense of fun to his photographs. His name is Joshua Black Wilkins and his lives in Nashville America.

Special Collections Childrens Books Research

Some pop up books for children I found in the library's Special Collections.

Birthday Pop up Card!

A Birthday Card I made that pops up. This has the extra support mechanism in the middle of the box shape to pull the sides out properly from a book I found in the library that my earlier improvised samples didnt have. It works much better.
